A people who forget their culture lose the compass that guides their future. In a world moving at the speed of technology and globalization, it is easy for traditions, languages, and values to fade into the background. Yet, culture is more than what we wear or the food we eat; it is the identity that shapes who we are. Our children understanding their roots is not a luxury but a necessity. As the African proverb says, “When the roots of a tree begin to decay, it spreads death to the branches.” To raise confident, grounded, and responsible children, we must first teach them where they come from.
Nigeria is a nation blessed with rich cultural diversity, from our languages and folklore to our music, respect for elders, communal living, and strong family values. Teaching children these traditions helps them build pride in their identity and a deeper sense of belonging. When a child learns to speak their mother tongue, hears moonlight stories, or understands the meaning behind traditional festivals, they connect with generations before them. In the words of Chinua Achebe, “A man who does not know where the rain began to beat him cannot know where he dried his body.” Culture gives children the wisdom of the past to navigate the future.
Beyond identity, culture builds character. Nigerian cultural values such as respect, resilience, hard work, and community spirit are timeless principles that shape responsible adults. In today’s fast-changing society, where foreign influences often dominate, intentionally teaching children our values helps them develop confidence without losing themselves. It reminds them that success is not just about achievement but also about integrity, kindness, and responsibility.
At White Cotton School, preserving culture through our children is one of our core commitments because we believe education is not complete without identity. Through our Cultural Day celebrations, storytelling sessions, native language engagement, traditional music and dance performances, arts and craft inspired by Nigerian heritage, and community-based learning activities, we intentionally create opportunities for our pupils to experience and embrace the beauty of Nigerian culture. We are raising children who will not only compete globally but will also carry their heritage proudly wherever they go.
